Fuel consumption conversions

These fuel consumption converters allow a simple conversion for most fuel consumption measurements including miles per gallon to kilometres per litre (mpg to kpl), miles per gallon to kilometres per gallon (mpg to kpg), miles per litre to kilometres per litre (mpl to kpl), miles per UK gallon to miles per US gallon and miles per gallon to litres per 100 kilometres (mpg to L/100km).

Alternatively the conversion tables show conversions for commonly used miles per gallon to kilometres per litre values for both UK Imperial and US Customary gallons.

Abbreviations

Miles per gallon

Abbreviations used for miles per gallon include mpg, MPG, mipg, MiPG, m/gal, mi/gal and m per gal.

Kilometres per litre

Abbreviations used for kilometres per litre include kpl, KPL, kmpl, KMPL, km/l, km/L, km per l and km per L.

Litres per 100 kilometres

Abbreviations used for litres per 100 kilometres include L/100km, L/100km, L per 100km, l per 100km and litres per 100km. L/100km is not often used as in many fonts in can easily be confused one hundredth of a kilometre (1/100km).

Miles per litre

Abbreviations used for the rarely used miles per litre include mpl, mipl, m/l, mi/l, MPL, MiPL, M/L, Mi/L and mi/L.

Kilometres per gallon

Abbreviations used for the rarely seen kilometres per gallon include, kpg, kmpg, km/g, KmPG, KMPG, KM/G, kmpgal, kpgal, km/gal and KM/Gal.

The current definition of a liter is 1 cubic decimeter (a decimeter being 10cm), so 1000 liters = 1 cubic meter.

The US gallon, when referring to liquids, is defined as 231 cubic inches or 0.133680555 cubic feet and the UK gallon, also known as the imperial gallon is legally defined as 4.54609 litres which is based on the volume of 10lbs of water at 62 degree fahrenheit.

The statute mile in both the UK and the US is 1,760 yards or 5,280 feet. This is equal to 1,609.344 metres or 1.609km

The kilometre is a metric unit of length defined as 1,000 metres, this is equal to 0.621371 miles.
